Theresienstadt Concentration Camp Hospital. 1943. Witness to History! - Theresienstadt concentration camp, also referred to as Theresienstadt Ghetto, was established by the SS during World War II in the fortress and garrison city of Terezín (German name), located in what is now the Czech Republic. Tens of thousands died there, some killed outright and others dying from malnutrition and disease. More than 150,000 other persons (including tens of thousands of children) were held there for months or years, before being sent by rail transports to their deaths at Treblinka and Auschwitz. More than 33,000 inmates died as a result of malnutrition, disease, or the sadistic treatment by their captors. In 1943 during a typhus epidemic the Nazi’s established a Ghetto hospital as a sadistic charade to the Red Cross of their “humane treatment” of Jewish prisoners. This original pencil sketch dated November 22, 1943 shows 3 male patients from the viewpoint of a patient in an opposite bed. This drawing acts as a witness to history portraying the wretched circumstances under Nazi occupation. 11.5 by 16 inches. Illegible signature in lower corner. Good condition. Framed.
