Rembrandt School. Jewish Pawnbroker. - Extraordinary painting depicting a Jewish Pawnbroker holding his pledged goods, which was a “permitted trade” for Jews in that period. Rembrandt’s sympathetic portrayal and facial expressions of Jews were legendary and compelling in their detail. Rembrandt encouraged his students to show individualism and expressiveness in their work and they expanded on his study of character genre which often focused on a face and expression. Oil on canvas. 33 by 43 inches. Some scratches. Antique frame circa 18th century (slightly damaged).
