French Model 1837 Naval and Marine muzzleloading percussion Pistol - French Model 1837 Naval and Marine muzzleloading percussion.? The muzzleloader is in very nice used condition. The barrel measures 6 inches in length. The smooth bore is clean. The wood stock is in very nice used condition. The brass accents are in very nice used condition along with the captive swivel ramrod mechanism. The hammer does have a broken hammer thumb piece. This piece checks all the boxes.? You can definitively identify the pistol by checking for these four distinctive maritime features: The Left Side Belt Hook: A long, steel belt/sash hook should be screwed directly into the left side of the wooden stock. Sailors and marines used this hook to hang the pistol directly onto their waist belts, avoiding wet leather holsters that rotted at sea. The Swivel Ramrod: Look closely at the muzzle. There should be a metal swivel assembly (a stirrup) permanently attaching the ramrod to the bottom of the barrel. This design stopped the ramrod from slipping from a sailor's hands and falling into the ocean during combat reloading. The Brass Hardware: The nose cap, the large single barrel band, and the heavy butt cap should all be made of solid brass to resist saltwater spray. The Anchor Stamp: If the brass butt cap on the bottom of the grip is not completely worn down, it will feature an officially stamped naval anchor motif.
