Historic Letter: Eulogy for Rabbi Yisrael Salanter at the Great Synagogue in St. Petersburg Handwritten invitation from the gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Danzig, rabbi of the great synagogue, ”Ovchovsky, ” in the capital city, Peterburg [St. Petersburg]. Sent to the sage Dr. Avraham Eliyahu Harkavi, to participate in the eulogies arranged for the geonim Rabbi Yisrael Salanter - father of the mussar movement and the gaon Rabbi Elazar Landau of Horodno, author of Damesek Eliezer on the Gr”a's elucidation on the Shulchan Aruch. He concludes, ”May Hashem compensate us for our loss.” Rabbi Yisrael of Salant passed away on 25 Shevat 1883, and the gaon Rabbi Eliezer Landau of Horodna passed away on 14 Shevat 1883. Both passed away the same month. The eulogy was held on 7 Adar.
