***Auction Highlight*** 1916-p Seated Liberty Quarter 25c Graded ms63+ BY SEGS. The 1916 is unique in the Standing Liberty quarter series, not only for its low 52,000-coin mintage but also for its design. Although often lumped in with the 1917 Type One quarters, the 1916 features an unrefined version of MacNeil's Type One obverse that, when compared with the 1917 Type One, shows softer hair details, mushy shield rivets and lines, and indistinct stars. The reed-and-bead along the border is also broken at the crown of Liberty's head, and there are minute differences in the drapery and the modeling of Liberty's bust. The 1916 Standing Liberty quarter more closely resembles MacNeil's original plaster models than the refined 1917 Type One does, albeit in much lower relief. The lowering of the relief was performed by Mint personnel, not MacNeil, and much of the artistic merit of the original design was sacrificed in favor of making the relief meet the mechanical requirements of the Mint. The obverse was sharpened and remodeled overall for the 1917 issue, again at the hand of the Mint, not MacNeil. Collectors will find much more of MacNeil's own hand in the design of the Type Two 1917 quarters than in the Type One issue of that year. To represent the Type One design in a type set, collectors may wish to opt for the key-date 1916, as it more closely resembles MacNeil's original work than the 1917 does, and is therefore a better counterpart to the Type Two design in a type set. This Select example shows about as much detail on the obverse as the hub ever had to offer, and the reverse is sharp. Satiny luster yields light golden toning, and abrasions are minimal. A Key Date's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation
