1942-1945 United States Wartime Silver Nickel Coin Set in Capital Plastic Holder. 11 coins.. A completed set of United States Silver War Time Nickles in a Capital Plastic Holder. World War II produced many shortages of materials necessary for the war effort…including nickel. As a result, in late 1942, the U.S. Gov’t began making nickels out of a new composition: 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% manganese. These coins are unique in other ways as well. They feature the largest mintmark on any U.S. coin, located above Monticello’s dome on the reverse. “Wartime silver” nickels minted in Philadelphia are also the only U.S. coins minted prior to 1979 to bear a “P” mintmark. This 11-pc set includes every date and mintmark that was issued: Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco.
