***Auction Highlight*** 1787 New Jersey Colonial Cent
***Auction Highlight*** 1787 New Jersey Maris 48-G DS4 Colonial Cent 1c Graded vf30 By SEGS. Nova Eborac (New York) copper coins were issued in 1787. Like the Excelsior coppers, the Nova Eborac pieces of the same year are attributed to John Bailey and Ephraim Brasher. The two are believed to have operated a joint minting operation in or near New York City, through which they sought a contract to coin coppers from the New York State legislature. Although the contract was never issued, Bailey and Brasher went on to produce a sizeable issue of Nova Eborac pieces, the letter punches for which match those of Brasher's rarer and more famous gold doubloon. This type apparently saw wide circulation, as most are well-worn. There are records of two pieces found archaeologically in Charleston, South Carolina! Dark olive brown surfaces with faint tan remaining on the reverse around the central device and within the recesses. A bit of microgranularity is noted, but the coin is glossy and very attractive. The obverse is well centered, while the reverse is high with Liberty’s head weak and partly off the flan. It is noted in the Whitman Encyclopedia that this variety is usually found with the date partly off the planchet, but the opposite is true here, a good fortune resulting from this particular centering misalignment. A couple of tiny natural flaws, but essentially problem free. A sharp and attractive example of the type and nicer than usually encountered.
