The 1796 Half cent is the undisputed key date in the half cent series. The coin we are offering today last sold in the Goldberg Auction of 2011. Here is the pedigree of the last three owners prior to our consignee, a private collection from New Hampshire. Ex Colonel Lester Bernstein, Stack's 4/86:27 (as VF30)-Jim McGuigan 7/86-Colonel Steven Ellsworth 3/13/2002. Please note that in the sale in 4/86, the coin was straight graded vf30, and I agree and see no real reason for the details grade. the portrait does display very light scratches and scuff marks, mostly in the hair, with a few more above the head. The marks blend into the attractive glossy olive brown and chocolate toning and the eye appeal of this piece remains excellent for the grade. The planchet is smooth, void of any trace of corrosion or verdigris. MDS with the reverse rotated 15 degrees CCW. The date and legends are complete and strong. In the Goldberg sale of 2011, the coin realized $35,650, and that was over 10 years ago. We estimate this coin today at $40-$50k. I have included the photos from the Goldberg sale to illustrate it is the exact same coin, the winner will also get Goldberg card and the original coins pouch and notes.
