(CHASSIDISM). Mara’n Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter Ha’Admor Me’Gur. Hebrew Broadside issued on the death of Grand Rebbe of Ger. “Woe to the Generation that has Lost its Leader - Woe to the Ship that has Lost its Captain.” Single-leaf broadside. Neat folds. Tel Aviv, Tze’irei Agudath Yisrael, 7th Sivan, 1948. Grand Rabbi Avraham Mordecai Alter (1866-1948) was the spiritual leader of the Agudath Yisrael movement and Rebbe of an estimated 200,00 Chassidim in pre-war Poland. He succeeded his father R. Yehuda Aryeh Leib (the Sefas Emes) as Rebbe of Ger in 1905. Due to the Jordanian occupation of the Mount of Olives, it was impossible to bury the Rebbe at that holy location, thus he was temporarily interred in the courtyard of his Yeshiva in Jerusalem. Despite the fact Jerusalem was under siege by the Arab Legion, thousands came to pay their final respects to their Rebbe.
