A prolific author known as ‘The Beis Ephraim’ after his multi-volume work of responsa, he succeeded R. Jonathan Eyebeschuetz as Rabbi of Altona, Hamburg and Wandsbeck. Due to wealth accrued from his banking pursuits, R. Ephraim Zalman was known as possessing “Torah VeGedula beMakom Echad” and his approval by way of approbations were sought after by many due to his scholarship and monetary support.
