(ISRAEL, LAND OF). DEINARD, EPHRAIM. Milchemeth Tugarma Be’Eretz Yisrael [“The War Against Turkey in the Land of Israel.”] FIRST EDITION. Photographic portrait of author. pp. 240. Loose in original boards. Lg. 4to. Goldman, Hebrew Printing in America 564. St. Louis, Moinester Printing, 1926. Deinard’s personal, piquant memoirs of his time living in the Holy Land (1914-16) - including his usual tirades against Zionism. Many well known personalities are painted in an unflattering light. Even though he was an American citizen, Deinard was arrested by the Turks apparently due to the slander of certain Zionists. Contains political insights concerning the Turks, Germans, British and Arabs. With details concerning the plague of locusts of 1915 and a pogrom that occurred in Jaffa on Chanukah. Of bibliographic interest, Deinard writes that he kept two large boxes of unbound incunables and other rare books in his home in Ramlah. These treasures were severely damaged when Ottoman military occupied his house. With tears in his eyes upon the loss of this ”priceless treasure” Deinard had the volumes buried in his garden: ”They are there till this present day” (pp. 62, 65).
