KAGAN, YISROEL MEIR OF RADIN. (The Chofetz Chaim).  Nidchei Yisrael. Text in Hebrew and Yiddish. First Edition of Yiddish translation. With the word “Mugah” (checked) at top of front endpaper written in the hand of the Chofetz Chaim. pp. 294. Browned. Contemporary boards. 4to. Warsaw, Ephraim Baumritter, 1897. Aware of the strains that modernity was placing on traditional Jewish way of life, especially in Western countries such as America, the Chofetz Chaim penned this work in order to solidify the reader’s commitment to maintaining the strictures of the Torah. The book addresses theological and practical aspects of basic Mitzvoth, such as marrying within the faith, keeping Kosher, and studying Torah. This was at a time when vast numbers of Jews were fleeing Russia for America and other distant countries - where very different community norms held sway.
