(HOLOCAUST: THE WOLLOCH HAGADAH). Hagadah shel Pesah LeZecher HaShoah - Pessach Haggadah in Memory of the Holocaust. Illustrated by David Wander. Calligraphy and micrography by Yonah Weinrib. Text in Hebrew and English. With twelve plates, each signed and numbered by the artist. 44 leaves of text, most illustrated by Wander and with calligraphy and micrography by Weinrib. One of the 31 limited copies numbered in Roman numerals. Loose as issued in original folding portfolio. Elephant folio. Haifa, 1985. The late Helene & Zygfryd Wolloch commissioned this Hagadah as a memorial to their parents who perished at the hands of the Nazis. “Wander and Weinreb juxtapose the themes of the Exodus and the Holocaust by emphasizing the shared histories of slavery, destruction, and redemption. Wander’s art is powerful in its simplicity and directness. He depicts crematoria, burning books, and the Star of David alongside the traditional Hebrew text of the Haggadah. He also includes brilliant borders, flowers, and the Israeli flag to symbolize the eventual freedom of the Jewish people. His drawings are devoid of human figures, signifying the absence of those who perished during the Holocaust.” Provenance: The Wolloch Family.
