Pest, 1870.  This beautifully written document in ivri-teitsch, is structured as a poem with many rhymes and interesting alphabetical wordplay. It celebrates the “Teilung” or separation, of Hungary’s Orthodox Jews from the Reform and Status Quo communities.  The schism in Hungarian Jewry (Ortodox–neológ szakadás, די טיילונג אין אונגארן) was the institutional division of the Jewish community in the Kingdom of Hungary between 1869 and 1871 following a failed attempt to establish a national, united representative organization. The founding congress of the new body was held during an ongoing conflict between the traditionalist Orthodox party and its modernist Neolog rivals, which had been raging for decades.  An important and rare piece of ephemera from the Teilung, which was a seminal moment in the history of both Hungarian Jewry and Orthodox Judaism itself.
