(GIBRALTAR). Joseph de Abraham Abudarham,  Representative of the Hebrew Nation in Gibraltar. Secretarial Letter Signed, written in English to the Lieutenant-Governor, Major-General John Smith. One long page, with attached blank. Somewhat faded but legible. Abudarham’s signature is beautifully written and clear. Gibraltar, 4th October, 1814. “A letter of thanks from the Chief of the Jewish Nation to Major General John Smith on his leaving Gibraltar.”  General Sir John Smith (1754-1837) served in Gibraltar from 1804 to 1814, as both Acting Governor and subsequently Governor. He became Colonel-Commandant of the 7th Battalion Royal Horse Artillery in 1815, and was promoted to General in 1837.  Representative of the Hebrew Nation in Gibraltar, the wealthy Moroccan-born Joseph Abudarham (1749-c. 1830) prominently served as a representative of the local Jewish community to the British overseeing officers.  See: https://gibraltar-intro.blogspot.com/2012/01/chapter-2_27.html  Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, on the Bay of Gibraltar, near the exit of the Mediterranean Sea into the Atlantic Ocean.
