Arolsen, 1736.  This decree addresses the process of legal assistance for debt repayment to Jews, issued in 1736 by Karl August Friedrich (1704-63), Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont.  According to the decree, if a debt remained unpaid to a Jewish creditor for over two years, the Jewish creditor had the right to sue in court and receive support from the authorities.  The purpose of this decree was to safeguard the rights of Jewish creditors, which were frequently jeopardized by prolonged legal proceedings following the death of a debtor, especially when spouses and heirs were unaware of outstanding debts.  The decree served as a practical regulation aimed at preventing Jewish creditors from having to impose excessive interest rates for loans and bonds as a way offset the risk of non-repayment.  Earlier, in March 1735, Karl August Friedrich had issued a decree outlining various restrictions for commercial activities of the Jewish population of the principality. These included prohibitions for Jews against selling bonds owed by Christians and the banning of Christian notaries from facilitating such sales for Jews.
