Rio de Janeiro, The Jewish Colonisation Association, 1935.  A rabbi and author who promoted the development of Brazil's Jewish community, Polish born Isaiah Raffalovich (1870–1956) was taken by his parents to Erez Israel in 1882. Later he left for Europe where he obtained his rabbinical diploma at the Hildesheimer Seminary in Berlin and then led congregations in Liverpool, Manchester and Wales.  In 1923 he was invited by the Jewish Colonization Association (ICA) to go to Brazil to promote immigration to that country and serve as a spiritual guide to the Jews there. In this capacity he helped the newly established communities, appealing to the common heritage of the Ashkenazi and Sephardi immigrants in working for the coordination of Jewish life in Brazil. In 1935 he moved to Erez Israel and was later appointed senior Jewish chaplain to the British forces in the Middle East.
