LANDAU, YITZCHAK ELIYAHU. Bi’ur al Sepher Tehillim. Autograph Manuscript in Hebrew, densely written on paper in a neat Aschkenazi cursive hand, with many edits and corrections. pp. 272. Few stains. Recent boards. Sm. 4to. Dubno, Lithuania, 19th-century.  The autograph manuscript of R. Yitzchak Eliyahu Landau’s commentary to Tehillim, published under the title Sepher Tehillim im Bi'ur Kefalim LeToshia (two commentaries, one on the meaning of the text, the other on language and style).  A prolific author, Vilna-born R. Yitzchak Eliyahu Landau (1801-76) resided in his wife’s town of Dubno for much of his life where he was a Darshan, modeling himself after R. Ya’akov Kranz, Dubno’s famous Maggid.  Sakes to his eloquence, he was chosen by the communities of Volhynia as member of the rabbinical commission appointed by the Emperor in 1861.  R. Landau took pride in hailing from one of the great cities of Jewish learning, signing his name here on the title-page as “One of the Children of Vilna…Son of ‘the Man of Science’ Shmuel.” Later in life he was once again in Vilna, where he served as Darshan.
