Surany, Slovakia c. 1875. Rabbi Chanoch Ehrentreu (1854-1927), became the Chief Rabbi of Munich and was the grandfather (and namesake) of the late Dayan Chanoch Ehrentreu (1932-2022) of London. R. Chizkiyahu Feivel Plaut (1818-95), author of the multi-volume Sefer Likutei Chaver Ben Chaim, was an important source of information for the teachings of the Chasam Sofer, of whom R. Plaut was a leading and most devoted student.
