MARKBREITER-KATZENEL LENBOGEN, BEIRISH. Fantastic collection of 140 Autograph Letters Signed (comprising some 300 pages), written to his son Gabriel Markbreiter. Many also written by his wife. Letters in Hebrew, with those written by the wife / mother, in Yiddish. All with German address panel on verso. All bound together in one mid-19th century volume, patterned boards, worn. 4to. 1813-24. The Hebrew and Yiddish Correspondence of an early 19th century rabbi and his wife to their son. Rabbi Berish Markbreiter-Katzenellenbogen (1761-1833) was the Chief Rabbi of Hotzenplotz (Czech Silesia, today, Osoblaha). His father was Rabbi Gabriel Markbreit (Chief Rabbi of Mecklenburg and Nickolsburg), the teacher and predecessor of Rabbi Mordechai Baneth, who was also a member of the Markbreit family.  These letters contain a wealth of local information. Contemporary rabbis mentioned include: R. Baruch Frankel Teomim of Leipnik and R. Mordechai Banet of Nikolsburg.  This remarkable family archive provides tremendous detail relating to personal as well as communal matters; along with overall social concerns in ways that only a parent can convey to and about their son, living far away.  Highly uncommon to glimpse a private side of a well-known communal rabbi from the perspective of being a concerned father to his son. The inclusion of the mother’s perspective make this archive all the more tantalizing.  Much social history waiting to be uncovered.
