LIPSCHÜTZ, YISRAEL. Kesav Rabbonus. Document of Rabbinic Appointment. Manuscript in Hebrew. One page with wax seal and integral blank, heavy folds, stained. Folio. Keszthely, Hungary, 20th Sivan, 1822. The rabbinic contract for Rabbi Israel Lipschitz (1783-1829), signed by 17 community leaders and stamped with the community’s wax seal. Rabbi Lipschitz is not to be confused with the author of the Tifereth Yisrael commentary on the Mishnah, however both of these rabbis were relatives - this one a great-nephew and the other a grandson of their namesake, Rabbi Israel Lipschitz of Cleves, the 18th century rabbi who infamously become embroiled in a lengthy halachic controversy concerning a gett. Also known as Kesthell, the Hungarian town of Keszthely is located on the western shore of Lake Balaton.
