HILDESHEIMER AZRIEL. Student’s report, stamped and signed by Rabbi Hildesheimer. Printed, with manuscript entries in Hungarian, grading the coursework of the student Leopold Gruenwald. Eisenstadt, Hungary (today, Austria), 11th November, 1858. Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer (1820-99) served as the rabbi of Eisenstadt for 18 years where he founded a Yeshiva imbued with a spirit that later became personified as “Torah im Derech Eretz.” Although certain Hungarian rabbinic luminaries, such as Maharam Schick, sent their children to Hildesheimer's Yeshiva, the zealous atmosphere in Hungary drove R. Hildesheimer to leave and reestablish himself in Germany. Subsequently in Berlin he led both Congregation Adass Jisroel, as well as the celebrated Rabbinerseminar für das orthodoxe Judenthum.
