SARUG, YISRAEL. Na’im Zemiroth Yisrael [Kabbalistic commentary to the three Sabbath songs composed by the Ar’i z’l]. Yitzchak Luria, the Ar’i HaKadosh, composed three celebrated Kabbalistic hymns for Shabbath, one each for the three particular Shabbat meals: Azamer Bishvachin, Asader Lisudassa and Benei Heichala. R. Yisrael Sarug Ashkenazi (also Saruk or Srugo, d. 1610) was a disciple of the Ar’i. Upon the death of his master, R. Sarug devoted himself to the propagation of the latter's Kabbalistic system. He gained many adherents in Italy, the most prominent of whom was R. Menachem Azariah di Fano. R. Pinchas Frenkel Teomim was the son-in-law of Rabbi Yechezkel of Shinova (the Divrei Yechezkel).
