Vinograd, Amsterdam, 608. Amsterdam, David de Castro Tartas, 1691. Born in Livorno, the author (1659–95) immigrated to Jerusalem prior to 1679 where he studied under R. Moshe Galante. In his Pri Chadash, da Silva sought to lessen the ultimate authority of the Shulchan Aruch by elucidating Halacha toward a more lenient approach. Initially, da Silva’s conjectures were seen as objectionable, although in time many leading Poskim began to accept his rulings, and they were often positively referenced by such authorities as R. Yonathan Eybeschuetz in his Krethi U’Plethi and R. Yoseph Te’omim in his Pri Megadim.
