Born in Baghdad, R. Eliyahu Suleiman Mani (1818-1899) was a disciple of R. Abdullah Somech and absorbed the study of Kabbalah and personal ascetic practices from a young age. He moved to Eretz Israel in 1856 in order to join the Kabbalistic Bet El Yeshiva in Jerusalem. In 1864 he was appointed chief rabbi of the city of Hebron where he established the Bet Ya’akov synagogue.
