German-born R. Gershon Aschkenazi (1615-93) was at various times a disciple of the Maharam Shi’f, R. Heschel of Cracow and especially, R. Yoel Sirkes (Ba’Ch). He in turn, mentored R. David Oppenheim of Prague.
R. Aschkenazi variously served as rabbi, Dayan and Rosh Yeshiva in Cracow, Nikolsburg, Vienna and Metz.
