An erudite scholar, R. Aharon Mendel Cohen (HaRe'em, 1866-1927) was born and educated in Tiberias and for thirty years served as Chief Rabbi of the Ashkenazi community in Cairo, Egypt. He worked assiduously for the renewal of semicha, in whose framework he founded the Agudat HaRabbanim in 1903, and after World War I, the Knesset Yisrael Association, that sought to establish a Central Beth Din - a Sanhedrin - in Jerusalem.
