WASSERMAN, ELCHANAN. (Rosh Yeshiva of Baranovitch, 1875-1941). Autograph Letter Signed and stamped, written on letterhead in Hebrew and Yiddish to Mrs. Pessia (Jenny) Miller-Fagin of Philadelphia. Sending praise and thanks to the Philadelphia philanthropist for her financial support of Mesivta Ohel Torah, Rabbi Wasserman’s yeshiva. One page. Baranowicze, Poland, 27th Tishrei, 1932. Rosh Yeshiva R. Elchanan Wasserman (1874-1941) was the primary disciple of the saintly Chofetz Chaim. In the 1930’s he spent a year and half in the United States to raise money for his yeshiva, leaving a deep impression upon many young American Jews, several of whom grew to become postwar Orthodox leaders. R. Wasserman returned to Europe and eventually shared the fate of his students, murdered alongside them by the Nazis in 1941. Mrs. Jennie Miller Faggen (1876-1968) was wealthy, pious, and generous. Her deep compassion drove her to become a patroness to countless European yeshivas and Torah scholars.
