UNTERMAN, ISSER YEHUDAH (Chief Rabbi of the State of Israel, 1886-1976). Autograph Letter Signed (and addressed), written on an aerogramme in Hebrew, to the Vaad Hapoel of Hapoel Mizrachi in Tel Aviv. Rosh Hashanah greetings to the labor-oriented religious political party. He urges the maintenance of abiding Faith, that the end of the Exile is near, and expresses consternation that he is unable to make Aliyah as yet. (That would come the following year, when Rabbi Unterman accepted the position of Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv). One page. Liverpool, Erev Rosh Hashanah, 1946. Born in Brisk, R. Isser Yehuda Unterman was a Rosh Yeshiva in Vishneve, and afterwards a rabbi in various Lithuanian communities, until 1924, when he was called to serve the rabbinate of the northern English city of Liverpool. In 1946 the State of Israel selected him to be Aschkenazi Chief Rabbi, a role he served until his death.
