SILVER, ELIEZER. (President of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada, 1882-1968). Autograph Letter Signed written in Hebrew on letterhead to Avraham Eber Halevi Kraushar. Rabbi Silver thanks his correspondent for the gift of a work written by his father, Rabbi Chaim Yaakov Kraushar of Dolyna and how impressed he was by its novel ideas, “unlike those of the ‘melaketim, ’ (the anthologizers) of rabbinic literature.” One page. Springfield, Massachusetts, 26th Nissan, 1929. Ordained by both R. Chaim Ozer Grodzenski and the Rogatchover Gaon, R. Eliezer Silver immigrated to the United States in 1907, where he served congregations in Harrisburg Penn., Springfiel, Mass., and Cincinnati, Ohio. He became a tour de force of the nascent American Orthodox rabbinate, eventually becoming the leading head of the Agudas Harabbonim. It was he who convened the emergency meeting in 1939 wherein the Vaad Hatzalah was created. In 1943 R. Silver organized and led the historic Rabbi’s Rally in Washington, DC. Abraham Eber Kraushar was the son of R. Chaim Yaakov Kraushar (ca 1860-1924). He published his father’s work, Sefer Be’er Ya’akov on Shulchan Aruch, with his son Chaim Eliezer (Henry L.) Kraushar.
