SHMULEVITZ, CHAIM (Rosh Yeshiva of the Mir, 1902-79). Autograph Letter Signed written on letterhead to R. Simchah Elberg of Brooklyn. One page. Maternal grandson of the Alter of Novardok and son-in-law of R. Eliezer Yehuda Finkel, R. Chaim Shmuelevitz was an essential part of the faculty of the Mir for almost fifty years. During the war years, he famously shepherded the yeshiva from Lithuania to Israel, via Shanghai. He taught, guided, and inspired thousands of disciples throughout his lifetime, with legendary diligence to Torah study. Polish scholar R. Simcha Elberg (1915-95) escaped along with the Mirrer Yeshiva to Shanghai. He settled in New York in 1947 where he served as editor of HaPardes, a journal of Talmud studies. He also served as a member of the executive committee of Agudath Israel of America and chairman of the executive board of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis.
