SCHWADRON, SHALOM MORDECHAI HAKOHEN (The Maharsham, 1835-1911). Autograph Letter Signed. Written to the community of Kopaigorod (Kopaihorod, Podolia), who sought to appoint a new Shochet to replace one who had recently died. However the son of the deceased Shochet claimed he had a Chazaka (first right) to occupy the position. The Maharsham here counsels the community residents to take the family of the deceased shochet to a Din Torah, yet in the meantime, he invalidates the authority of the new shochet. As he writes: ”Until the Beth Din provides its ruling after hearing the claims of all parties, you are prohibited from appointing a [new] Shochet and Bodek.” The Maharsham makes note here of a letter relating to this issue by R. Avraham Binyomin Kluger. Brezhan, (now Berezhany, Ukraine), 1899. The Maharsham, Gaon of Brezhan and brilliant Torah scholar, responded to questions posed from around the world (including from the Chofetz Chaim), all which were later published in multiple volumes under the title Shailoth U’Teshuvoth Maharsham. He also authored many other renowned works including Da’ath Torah, Mishpat Shalom and Techeleth Mordechai. His grandson and namesake, was the celebrated ”Maggid of Jerusalem.” One page (approx. 17 lines), light wear at folds.
