The Rogotchover Gaon of Dvinsk was renowned as an unparalleled Talmudic genius in his time. He authored Tzafnath Pa’aneach on Maimonides’ Mishneh Torah, and many other works, all of which are regarded as a unparalleled classics of rabbinic thought and learning. The Rogotchover gave Semichah to the Lubavitcher Rebbe, R. Menachem Mendel Schneerson, and subsequently remained of significant relevance to the Rebbe for the rest of his enormously creative life.
