KOOK, AVRAHAM YITZCHAK HAKOHEN (First Aschkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel, 1865-1935). Letter written in Hebrew on letterhead, stamped and signed by Chief Rabbi Rav Kook and three Dayanim of his Jerusalem Beth Din: Rabbi Tzvi Pesach Frank (1873-1960), who headed the Bet Din; Rabbi Eliyahu Re’em and Rabbi Yosef Gershon Horowitz. The text of the letter is written in the hand of Rabbi Frank. The letter concerns the production of Passover Matzoth, specifying that they are baked in Jerusalem and not outside of Eretz Israel. One page. Jerusalem, 17th Adar, 1933. Possessed of enormous charisma, passion, compassion, piety and learning, R. Kook was regarded by his admirers - and even by some of his detractors - as a Tzadik of rare standing. One of his oft quoted bon-mots was, “Renew the old, and sanctify the new, ” which expresses his attitude as to how build the new Jewish future: Faithful to the ways of the past, simultaneous to an eye toward future progress, and thus, leading to the Ultimate Redemption.
