KAHANEMAN, YOSEF SHLOMO (The Ponevitcher Rav, 1886–1969). Typed Letter Signed written in Hebrew on letterhead to Rabbi Yitzchak Sodden of Brooklyn. Requesting financial assistance for the Ponovezher Yeshiva, as well as for an orphanage “which is the spiritual and physical home of over 500 orphans.” Two pages. Bnei Brak, 1st Tammuz, 1954. Established by R. Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman in 1919, Ponevezh Yeshiva became famed as a Torah study center and stronghold of Orthodox Jewry in Lithuania. After the majority of its student body perished in the Holocaust, Rav Kahaneman re-established the yeshiva in Bnei Brak, Israel where it is regarded as the leading Litvish-oriented Yeshiva in Israel.
