BERLIN, CHAIM. (Of Volozhin, 1832-1913). Autograph Letter Signed, written in Hebrew to the directors of the Kollel Perushim and Chassidim in Jerusalem. Donations from six named donors. One page. Kobryn (Belarus), 5th Sivan, 1895. R. Chaim Berlin was the eldest son of R. Naphtali Zevi Judah Berlin (the Netzi’v, 1817-93), dean of the Volozhin Yeshivah. R. Chaim served as Chief Rabbi of Moscow, before succeeding his father in Volozhin, a position he maintained until the (first) forced closure of the yeshiva in 1892. In later years he moved to Eretz Israel and served as Jerusalem’s unofficial, senior consulting rabbi, alongside R. Shmuel Salant.
