Opening blank inscribed: “Compliments of the author”. Also, “Gift from Chaplain Potter”. pp. xiv, 512. Ex-library, some wear. Original gilt boards, rubbed. 4to. Boston, E. B. Stillings, 1896. Color Sergeant LEOPOLD KARPELES is prominently included. His heroic action at the Battle of the Wilderness resulting in award of the Medal of Honor. Also his bravery at North Anna where he was seriously wounded. His photograph wearing the MOH appears on page 102.  The 57th Massachusetts, also known as The Second Veteran Regiment, was a hard fighting late war unit composed of veterans who had served earlier in the war, with other units, for at least nine months.
