Rabbi David Einhorn (1809-79), leader of Reform Judaism in America and a fiery Abolitionist. Born in Bavaria, Einhorn came to Baltimore in 1855 and was appointed rabbi of Har Sinai Synagogue. He published a new version of the Hebrew prayer-book that was the forerunner to the Union Prayer Book. In 1861 Einhorn attacked Rabbi Morris Raphall’s discourse contending the Bible condoned slavery. Having created an uproar, Einhorn had to flee Baltimore. He subsequently assumed pulpits in Philadelphia and New York. He passed away four months after retiring.
