Salomon (1826-97) was born into a prominent Jewish family in Prussia. He joined the 5th Missouri Infantry in 1861 with rank of captain. Promoted to colonel, organized and commanded the 9th Wisconsin Infantry. Promoted to brigadier general July 18, 1862. Breveted major general March, 1865. Discharged August, 1865. Cousin of Edward S. Salomon of the 82nd Illinois Infantry. Brother of Wisconsin governor.
