Born in Mako, Hungary, to a prominent Magyar-Jewish family, Joseph Pulitzer (1849-1911) was a Private in the First New York Cavalry. He served from September 30, 1864 to June 5, 1865, and fought in the Appomattox Campaign. Was later a prominent newspaperman with the St. Louis Times Dispatch and the New York World. Pulitzer Prize named for him.
