NONES, HENRY BENJAMIN. CARTE-DE-VISITE PHOTOGRAPH. Standing view in uniform holding hat. “Capt. Nones” on verso. No photog. imprint. Henry Benjamin Nones (1804-68) was a Captain in the US Revenue Marine (Revenue Cutter Service). He commanded the same ship (Cutter Forward) in both the Mexican War and the Civil War. Nones was commended for “valiant service” for his role in the capture of the city of Tabasco. In the Civil War he kept Union shipping lanes open in the Chesapeake Bay. The original glass-plate of this image housed in the National Portrait Gallery is attributed to MATTHEW BRADY.
