TWO PHOTOGRAPHS. * 1: Fine ninth plate tintype photograph depicting Mayer seated at right; on left is his commanding officer, Captain John Ehrenbergh, who holds pocket watch and has a cigar stub in his mouth. Expertly tinted. Original mat and glass. Mounted in later frame. * 2: Albumen photograph (larger than carte-de-visite size). Leopold Mayer is clearly identified, his hand resting on Captain John Ehrenbergh’s shoulder. Three other men featured in the group: Leopold’s two brothers, Adolph and Michael, served directly under him and are likely in this image. Photograph is dated July, 1862 when the regiment was stationed near Manassas Junction, guarding the Orange & Alexandria Railroad. THREE JEWISH BROTHERS IN ONE COMPANY: Company C, 12th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Capt. Leopold Mayer is seen in both photographs. Leopold, who commanded his company, was captured twice, yet escaped from both Libby and Columbia prisons. THE ALBUMEN PHOTOGRAPH IS UNCOMMON, AS FEW PHOTOGRAPHS WERE TAKEN IN THE FIELD. TINTYPE IS OF EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY.
