First Lieutenant Friedrich Herzberg (1837-84) entered service on April 19, 1861 into the 66th New York Infantry, a ninety day unit, at the rank of third sergeant. The 66th had many Jews in its ranks and was commanded by Lieutenant Simon Pincus from 1864. Herzberg fought in major battles including Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness and Petersburg. He was taken prisoner at Petersburg on June 17, 1864 and paroled on March 17, 1865.
