Born to a converso family which had converted from Judaism to Christianity, Juan Luis Vives March (1493-1540) was a Spanish (Valencian) scholar and Renaissance humanist who spent most of his adult life in the Netherlands. His beliefs relating to the soul, his insights into medical practice, and his perspective on emotions, memory and learning, resulted in Vives being among the very first to shed light on key ideas that went toward how modern psychology is today perceived.
