Alongside the political deterioration of Venice, ever new repressive measures were enacted against the Jewish community, based increasingly on antisemitic sentiment rather than economic motive. On 27 September 1777, the Senate passed a far-reaching decree banishing all Jews from Venice unless they could prove a right of residence. Furthermore, Jews were forbidden to maintain a manufacturing business, nor permitted to sell meat, grain, indeed no foodstuff at all.
