Edicts and municipal orders relating to the socio-economic existence of the Jews permitted to reside in the Piedmont region of Italy, the capital of which is Turin. Piedmont was the chief geographical and political entity in northwestern Italy during the late Middle Ages and early modern times, its history dominated by that of the House of Savoy. Jews, largely of French extraction, settled there permanently and continuously from the second half of the fourteenth century.
