Printed Appointment book issued by the Brooklyn Chapter of Hadassah in 1936, with approx. 150 pages HAND-WRITTEN in Hebrew, Yiddish and English. Worn. Original boards, spine taped. 4to.  New York, 1936-72. Internal evidence reveals that this book likely belonged to Rabbi Chaim Shlomo Gottesman (d. 1983), also known as Rev. Solomon Gottesman of Beis Medrash Hagadol Anshei Ungarin located at 242 East 7th Street in Manhattan, a synagogue founded by Hungarian immigrants in 1885. Reverend Gottesman meticulously recorded here the donations of hundreds of named individuals. Further details encompass the records of weddings, cemetery unveilings, divorces, synagogue honors, the procurement of etrogim and Kosher meat, and much more. Provides an uncommon first-hand picture of American Orthodox life through the viewpoint of a diligent synagogue sexton (shamash / gabbai) over the course of several decades of the 20th-century.
