The Hambro Synagogue was founded in 1702 by Mordechai of Hamburg, son-in-law of the celebrated Glückel of Hamlin, as a break-away from the Great Synagogue. Ironically, two centuries later and after a number of vicissitudes, the Hambro Synagogue closed and became amalgamated with the Great Synagogue in 1936. See P.
