Featuring the personalities relating to the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP). Joseph Ross (1911-91) was an Israeli illustrator and caricaturist. Born in Antwerp, Belgium, he never formally studied art, but read medicine at the University of Berlin until 1933, when he returned to Belgium upon the Nazis rise to power. In 1935 he immigrated to Eretz Israel. There, he opened an advertising agency and simultaneously began sketching caricatures of local political figures, many of which were published in numerous local daily newspapers both locally and abroad. He also designed several stamps for the JNF. During the Mandate era much of the focus of Ross’ caricatures was on depicting the struggle against the British government, which led to a number of his illustrations being censored by the authorities. After the establishment of the State of Israel Ross turned his artistic attention to the disputes between the local political parties as well as the Israeli-Arab conflict.
