AN ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL TOOL FOR GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH. During World War II, the Kingdom of Hungary was a member of the Axis powers. However in March 1944 German forces occupied Hungary. Most Jews in Hungary were protected from deportation to German extermination camps for the first few years of the war, although they had for a longer period been subjected to a harsh series of anti-Jewish laws which imposed severe limits on Jewish participation in Hungary's public and economic life. From the start of the German occupation of Hungary, Jews were deported to extermination camps. From 15th May - 9th July 1944, over 434,000 Jews were deported to Auschwitz, on 147 trains, where almost 80% were murdered immediately upon arrival.
